Dear Affiliates,
We are approaching our busiest season for SIG 1-sponsored professional development activities. This season's activities are focused on literacy. Our annual SIG 1 Web chat will be held on Tuesday, October 10, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Three of our 2017 Perspectives authors who contributed articles on reading and writing assessment and intervention will answer your questions “live” during this event. Continuing education units (CEUs) are not available for our Web chats but the Web chats are free. If you cannot attend the Web chat, free transcripts are available for downloading after the event. Look for further details about the Web chat including the connection link and biosketches of our expert authors on the SIG 1 Community. In November, we are pleased to offer three CEU activities at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Los Angeles. Jan Wasowicz, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, will provide a three-hour short course on strategies for teaching decoding, collaborating with other educators, and conducting progress monitoring. SIG 1 members are eligible for a discounted short course fee for this event. In conjunction with the 2017 Literacy Topic Convention Committee, we are cosponsoring two free CE events. Theresa A. Roberts, Ph.D., will present a two-hour seminar on supporting decoding skills in elementary students. Back by popular demand from the 2016 Convention is Roberta Golinkoff, Ph.D., who will give a talk entitled, “From Coo to Code in Baby's First Years: News for the Crib on Language/Literacy Development”. We will post details about the schedule of these much-anticipated events on the SIG 1 Community as soon as the ASHA Convention schedule is released.
