On behalf of the Special Interest Group (SIG) 5 Coordinating Committee (CC), I would like to welcome you to Perspectives for 2017. The CC is excited to engage with all of you in this year. The CC, including our new Editor, Dennis Ruscello, has a great year planned for Perspectives. We also need to again thank Adriane Baylis for her outstanding work in the 3 previous years as the SIG 5 Perspectives editor.
We begin our issue with three great articles in the First Part of 2017. First, David Beukelman and colleagues discuss prosthodontic management of velopharyngeal dysfunction in individuals with neurological conditions. The article includes case studies that illustrate the use of palatal lifts and nasal obturators. Second, Canice Crerand and colleagues present psychological risks and management for children with cleft lip and/or palate. Risks from infancy through adolescence for affected individuals and families are discussed. The authors offer strategies for identification of risks and provision of supports and interventions. Finally, Linda Vallina and Brenda Louw discuss health care issues related to individuals with cleft palate as they transition from adolescence to young adulthood. The authors' framework for discussion is based on the components of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health.
