Happy New Year! I would like to welcome all of you to the Special Interest Group (SIG) 17 Community as an affiliate! During 2016, we engaged in an initiative that focused on developing a proposed list of competencies for effective global engagement.
First, Coordinating Committee (CC) members (Karen Pollock, associate coordinator; Elise Davis McFarland and Rosario Roman, Committee members; DeAnne Wellman Owre, professional development manager; Carolyn Wiles Higdon, Perspectives editor; Lily Waterston, American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA] ex-officio; and me) reviewed existing literature and drew from our own clinical and teaching experiences to develop a draft of global competencies. This proposed draft of 20 global competencies distributed in a framework of dispositions, attitudes, knowledge, and skills was presented in a poster session at the ASHA 2016 Convention in Philadelphia, PA.
