Greetings Affiliates,
Happy 2017! I would like to welcome all of our affiliates to a new year, which promises to be busy and productive for Special Interest Group (SIG) 8. I especially welcome new affiliates. As you know, we are the SIG that focuses on prevention of the debilitating effects of auditory and vestibular disorders and the important role hearing and speech professionals play in helping people maintain good hearing and balance—so necessary for maintaining a high quality of life and reducing the impact of other health problems. We are the SIG that encompasses all areas of audiology practice; regardless of our work setting, each of us can do something to promote healthy hearing. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 60% of hearing loss is preventable. SIG 8 is here to raise awareness of the unique role audiologists play putting prevention into practice—through educating individuals about the importance of hearing health, promoting screening and access to care, endorsing best practices, and counselling clients about risk factors and preventive measures—thus reducing the societal impact of audiology-related disorders.
