Greetings Affiliates,
Like the previous year, I am writing my second column on the eve of the World Voice Day—April 16—an annual event to celebrate all voice things. This is the 14th year of the World Voice Day celebration in the United States since its initiation in 2002. The main goal of the World Voice Day is to increase awareness and the importance of the voice among the general public. This event first started in Brazil as the Brazilian National Voice Day in the year 1999. An interprofessional team consisting of speech-language pathologists, physicians, and singing teachers collaborated on creating the Brazilian National Day. Subsequently with the participant of other countries like Argentina, Portugal, and Brazil, the Brazilian National Day became the International Voice Day. In 2002 The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery first officially celebrated this voice day and it was in 2002 that the term World Voice Day was coined. An excellent historical overview of the World Voice Day can be found in the article titled, “April 16: The World Voice Day,” by Jan G. Švec and Mara Behlau in the journal Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica 2007, 59, 53–54. Thank you all for creating awareness and helping so many individuals with voice disorders around the world!
