On October 1, 2015, implementation of the International Classification of Diseases and Disorders, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) health care coding system went into effect (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd/icd10cm.htm). On October 30, 2015, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Final Rule, which is a lengthy document that contains, among many other items, the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and Medicare rules and regulations that may apply to speech-language pathologists and audiologists. (https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Medicare-Fee-for-Service-Payment/AcuteInpatientPPS/FY2016-IPPS-Final-Rule-Home-Page.html). Each of these documents has a direct effect on SLP coding, billing, and documentation and has stimulated a great deal of discussion and a number of questions among our colleagues. Questions and answers about ICD-10 and the Final Rule as well as a few other relevant topics on evaluation and management of voice disorders follow.
