Greetings Affiliates,
We are at the beginning of another busy year at SIG 8. As you know, in 2015 we changed our name from “Public Health Issues Related to Hearing and Balance” to “Audiology and Public Health.” This change reflects our increasing awareness of the important role audiologists play in preventing auditory and vestibular disorders, as well as the importance of good hearing and balance for maintaining quality of life and reducing the impact of other health problems. Our new name encompasses public health concerns in all areas of audiology practice (e.g., tinnitus) which may not have been self-evident in the terms hearing and balance. Audiologists practice public health whenever they work towards preventing audiology-related problems from happening or recurring (e.g., in managing newborn hearing screening programs, raising awareness of noise-induced hearing loss, or promoting falls prevention). In addition, hearing function is associated with many other public health concerns such as dementia, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and depression. Audiologists are uniquely qualified to raise awareness of these issues, promote access to care, endorse best practices, and reduce the societal impact of audiology-related disorders.
